Tesla did not leave his town until the mature age of 28. Before then he had not lived anywhere else and therefore had a shielded view of the world and how modern technology of their time worked.
Thomas Edison invited Nikola to come work for him on his inventions and ideas. The two did not last long however due to Tesla trying out his own ideas which rivaled Edison. The two eventually parted ways and became sworn enemies.
